City Group Guide: Renewed Work — Working With Purpose

Colossians 3:23–24 & Genesis 1:26–28

1. Setting the Kingdom Vision (10 min)

God cares deeply about the work we do. From the beginning of Scripture, humanity was created to cultivate, build, create, serve, and steward the world alongside God. Work is not simply about income or success—it is part of our calling and worship.

Yet many people experience work as exhausting, meaningless, or tied only to achievement and identity. Jesus renews our understanding of work by placing it within God’s greater story of redemption and purpose.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.” — Colossians 3:23

Kingdom work is not limited to ministry or church settings. Whether in homes, offices, schools, businesses, trades, or creative spaces, God uses ordinary work for His glory and the good of others.

Discussion:

  • What messages does culture give us about work and success?

  • When does work become unhealthy or controlling?

  • How does seeing work as worship change our perspective?

  • Where do you struggle most in your work right now?

(Leader note: emphasize that work is not ultimate—but it is deeply meaningful when rooted in God’s story.)

2. Guide Overview: Purpose Over Performance (2 min)

Jesus renews not only what we do, but why we do it. Tonight we’ll reflect on how work becomes meaningful when it flows from identity in Christ rather than pressure, status, or performance.

3. Kingdom Practice: Working Unto God (30 min)

Step 1: Read the Passage (5 min)

Read Colossians 3:23–24 and Genesis 1:26–28 aloud together.

Pause and ask:

  • “What stands out to you most from these passages?”

  • “How do these verses reshape the meaning of work?”

Step 2: Reflect (5 min)

Spend time quietly reflecting and praying.

Consider:

  • “Where have I attached my identity too strongly to work?”

  • “Where do I feel frustration, burnout, or lack of purpose?”

  • “How might God want to renew my perspective on work?”

Step 3: Share and Pray (15 min)

Invite each person to share one challenge or area where they desire greater purpose, balance, or faithfulness in work.

Pray together:

“Father, help us work with integrity, purpose, humility, and peace. Teach us to honor You through the work of our hands and trust You with the outcomes.”

(Leader tip: model honesty about stress, ambition, burnout, or striving.)

Step 4: Group Reflection (5 min)

Discuss together:

  • How can work become worship?

  • What does healthy ambition look like?

  • How do we balance rest, purpose, and responsibility?

  • How can Christians influence workplaces and communities for good?

4. Reflection: Faithfulness in Everyday Work (5 min)

Re-read Colossians 3:23–24.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord.”

Reflect:
What would change if you truly viewed your work as service unto God rather than only people, money, or recognition?

5. Exercise for the Week Ahead (3 min)

Practice: Working With Purpose

  • Begin each workday with a short prayer of surrender.

  • Identify one way to reflect Christ through your attitude, integrity, or encouragement this week.

  • Practice gratitude for the opportunity to work and serve others.

  • Pay attention to where God may be inviting healthier rhythms of rest and trust.

Closing Prayer

“Lord Jesus, thank You for giving purpose to our work. Help us work with integrity, humility, excellence, and peace. Keep us from striving for identity in achievement alone, and teach us to serve You faithfully in every task and responsibility. May our work reflect Your Kingdom and bring life to those around us. Amen.”
