City Group Guide: Renewed Marriages — Marriage in the Kingdom

Ephesians 5:21–33

1. Setting the Kingdom Vision (10 min)

Marriage is more than a relationship for personal happiness—it is a covenant designed to reflect the love of Christ. In Scripture, marriage becomes a living picture of the Gospel: sacrificial love, faithful commitment, grace, forgiveness, and mutual service.

In a culture that often views marriage through the lens of fulfillment or convenience, Jesus calls husbands and wives to something deeper: a lifelong covenant that reflects His love for His Church.

"Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ." — Ephesians 5:21

Discussion:

  • What messages about marriage have shaped your expectations?

  • Why is sacrificial love difficult in marriage?

  • How does understanding marriage as a covenant change the way we approach conflict and commitment?

  • In what ways can marriage reflect the Gospel?

(Leader note: emphasize that healthy marriages are not perfect marriages—they are relationships continually shaped by grace and repentance.)

2. Guide Overview: Covenant Love (2 min)

Tonight we'll reflect on how Jesus renews marriage by teaching us to love sacrificially, serve humbly, and remain faithful through every season.

3. Kingdom Practice: Loving Like Christ (30 min)

Step 1: Read the Passage (5 min)

Read Ephesians 5:21–33 aloud together.

Pause and ask:

  • "What phrase or verse stands out most to you?"

  • "What do you learn about Christ's love from this passage?"

Step 2: Reflect (5 min)

Spend time quietly reflecting:

  • "Where is my marriage flourishing?"

  • "Where do I need to grow in humility, patience, or grace?"

  • "What is one way I can better serve my spouse?"

Step 3: Share and Pray (15 min)

Invite couples or individuals to share one area where they desire growth.

Pray:

"Father, strengthen our marriages with love, grace, humility, and faithfulness. Help us reflect Christ in our relationships."

(Leader tip: create a safe space for honesty without requiring anyone to share deeply personal struggles.)

Step 4: Group Reflection (5 min)

Discuss together:

  • How can we pursue healthy communication and forgiveness?

  • What habits strengthen a marriage over time?

  • How does a Christ-centered marriage impact families and communities?

4. Reflection: Covenant Over Convenience (5 min)

Re-read Ephesians 5:25:

"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her."

Reflect:
How might God be inviting you to love more sacrificially this week?

5. Exercise for the Week Ahead (3 min)

Practice: Intentional Love

  • Pray with or for your spouse each day.

  • Have one intentional conversation without distractions.

  • Serve your spouse in one practical way this week.

  • Practice gratitude by naming three things you appreciate about your spouse.

Closing Prayer

"Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of marriage. Teach us to love sacrificially, forgive quickly, and remain faithful to one another. May our marriages reflect Your grace and bring glory to You. Amen."
