City Group Guide: Renewed Singleness — Christ & Paul’s Example

1 Corinthians 7:32–35 & Psalm 16:11

1. Setting the Kingdom Vision (10 min)

Our culture often treats singleness as something to escape or a season to endure. Scripture presents a different picture. Singleness is not a waiting room for real life—it is a valuable and meaningful calling in the Kingdom of God.

Jesus and Paul both modeled lives of purposeful singleness, demonstrating that our ultimate fulfillment is found in Christ, not in marital status.

"An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord's affairs—how he can please the Lord." — 1 Corinthians 7:32

Discussion:

  • What messages does culture communicate about singleness?

  • Why can singleness sometimes feel incomplete or lonely?

  • What opportunities does singleness provide for serving God and others?

  • How does identity in Christ reshape the way we view singleness?

(Leader note: avoid presenting singleness as either superior or inferior to marriage. Emphasize dignity, purpose, and calling.)

2. Guide Overview: Contentment and Calling (2 min)

Tonight we'll reflect on how Jesus renews our understanding of singleness and invites us into a life of purpose, intimacy with God, and wholehearted devotion.

3. Kingdom Practice: Finding Wholeness in Christ (30 min)

Step 1: Read the Passage (5 min)

Read 1 Corinthians 7:32–35 and Psalm 16:11 together.

Pause and ask:

  • "What stands out to you from these passages?"

  • "What does this teach us about contentment?"

Step 2: Reflect (5 min)

Quietly reflect:

  • "Where do I seek fulfillment outside of Christ?"

  • "How can I embrace this season more intentionally?"

  • "What opportunities might God be giving me right now?"

Step 3: Share and Pray (15 min)

Invite everyone to share one area where they desire greater contentment or purpose.

Pray:

"Lord, help us find our identity and satisfaction in You alone. Teach us to live with purpose and joy in every season."

Step 4: Group Reflection (5 min)

Discuss together:

  • How can the church better support and value singleness?

  • What unique opportunities come with this season of life?

  • How does our identity in Christ free us from comparison?

4. Reflection: Fully Known and Fully Loved (5 min)

Re-read Psalm 16:11:

"In your presence there is fullness of joy."

Reflect:
What would it look like to believe that Christ is enough today?

5. Exercise for the Week Ahead (3 min)

Practice: Living Wholeheartedly

  • Spend intentional time with God each day.

  • Invest in one meaningful friendship or relationship.

  • Serve someone in a practical way this week.

  • Practice gratitude for this current season of life.

Closing Prayer

"Father, thank You that our identity is found in You. Teach us to live with contentment, purpose, and joy, trusting that You are enough in every season. Amen."
